Overview

Lhotse is the fourth-highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,516 meters (27,939 feet). What makes it unique is that its route closely follows the same path as Mount Everest. The route up to just above Camp 4 mirrors that taken by Tenzing and Hillary during their first ascent of Everest in 1953, and it was first successfully climbed by a Swiss team in 1956.

Lhotse, meaning "South Peak" in Tibetan, has long remained in the shadow of Mount Everest. Even via the standard route, following the Swiss first ascent, its climb is considered challenging. However, in recent years, it has gained popularity due to shared logistics with Everest expeditions. Whether with the support of Sherpas and supplemental oxygen or through an alpine-style ascent without additional oxygen, we provide the ideal conditions for your Lhotse summit attempt.

Itinerary Lhotse 8,516m Peak next to Mount Everest

Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8551 meters (27,923 feet). It is climbed from virtually the same route as Mount Everest. The route to the 3rd camp is the same as that of Tenzing and Hillary's first ascent route of Everest in 1953, and the dates we have chosen feature the best weather of the year.

Trip Itinerary Lhotse (51 Days)

Planned Itinerary

Latest on Day 2 arrive in Kathmandu, 1,300 meters (4,265 feet).

  • Airport transfer to nice ****hotel, Kathmandu.
  • Orientation meeting and chance to buy last minute supplies, visit temples, and tour the city. Stay at hotel.

In this phase of our expedition, our goal is to reach base camp comfortably, take a gradual approach to acclimatize to the altitude, and stay healthy throughout the journey.

The steps along the way are:

- Fly to Lukla, 2,860 meters (9,385 feet). Walk to Phakding 2650 meters (8,695 feet). Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to Namche Bazaar at 3,450 meters (11,320 feet). Teahouse-Lodge.
- Rest day with acclimatization hike in Namche. Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to Pangboche at 3,750 meters (12,300 feet). Participate in a Buddhist Puja blessing ceremony with the local Lama at the monastery if you wish. Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to Pheriche at 4,250 meters (13,945 feet). Visit the Himalayan Rescue Association health clinic. Teahouse or camping. Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to Dugla at 4,600 meters (15,090 feet). Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to Lobuche at 4,900 meters (16,075 feet). Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to Gorak Shep at 5,150 meters (16,900 feet). Teahouse-Lodge.
- Walk to base camp at 5,340 meters (17,400 feet). Camping in our comfortable prepared base camp.
- Rest, organization, and training day in basecamp

A 14-day acclimatization period is planned.

The goals are: a) to establish the base camp and higher camps, and b) to conduct acclimatization climbs for participants, reaching at least Camp 3 (7,200m) with an overnight stay there, ideally continuing with an additional ascent to Camp 4.

The steps we may follow along in this 14 days, with rest days in-between at our comfortable base camp:
- Climb to camp 1 at 6,100 meters (20,010 feet). Sleep at camp 1.
- Climb to camp 2 at 6,400 meters (21,000 feet). Sleep at camp 2.
- Climb to camp 3 at 7,300 meters (23,950 feet). Return to camp 2, sleep there.
- Rest at camp 2.
- Climb to camp 3 and sleep there.
- Climb higher, possible as far as camp 4 at 7,600 meters (24,934 feet), and descent to camp 2.
- Descent to base camp.

Rest in basecamp or descend to a lower village such as Pheriche.

There is ample time (16 days, over two weeks) for two full summit attempts:

  • Sufficient reserve time to wait for an optimal weather window.
  • The summit ascent will be carried out in teams within the expedition.
  • The climb from base camp to the summit typically takes 3-4 days.
  • The descent takes another 1-2 days and will also be done in teams within the expedition.

We pack up the base camp and begin the trek back to Lukla. From there, we take a flight to Kathmandu before heading home.

About Lhotse

Expedition, 8000m, high, very cold, very windy, difficult 8000m-peak, normal route, opposite Mount Everest.

Temperatures

During the summit attempt, temperatures can reach as low as -30°C, with a wind chill factor making it feel like -55°C.

Gear

Each participant in the Lhotse expedition is required to have the recommended personal equipment (PDF-download).

Participation requirements

Requirements: Altitude experience from several expeditions and an above-average physical condition are necessary.

  • Fullservice-members: You should have 7,000m+ / 23,000ft+ high-altitude experience and be an independent mountaineer (alpine tours at least AD according to UIAA scale), have experienced camping ad cooking in the wintry conditions. Ice techniques, glacier travel with crampons, and alpine climbing techniques er needed. You should have knowledge of crevasse rescue techniques and of frostbite symptoms, high altitude sicknesses, and their basic treatment.
  • Basic-members: To climb Lhotse without supplementary oxygen and Sherpa support, you should have successfully climbed at least one 8,000m+ peak in a similar style.
  • Less experienced, you can only join with a 1:1 guide and personal training to climb Lhotse should be considered.

Technical requirements: The greatest difficulties on the three steep steps are defused by means of fixed ropes. Rope-free access to 45° steep snow and firn flanks and rock climbing up to UIAA3 must nevertheless be mastered absolutely safely. In particular, securing on the fixed rope with ascenders and abseiling techniques must be mastered absolutely safely (with thick gloves!). The final couloir to the summit is the crux of the climb.

Physical Fitness: Stages of several days must be completed and you must be able to assess your strength and reserves well. During the night at the last camp (approx. 7,600 m / 25,000 ft) and during the summit ascent temperatures around -40°C plus wind-chill-factor can be expected. For the summit day, an ascent of about 8-12 hours followed by a descent of 4-6 hours.

Lack of comfort: We climb constantly at high altitude, still health and fitness must be maintained. We will help you with this. A good personal organization and preparation are necessary to stay healthy and fit during the expedition.

Danger - Warning: Each participant takes part in this expedition independently and at their own risk. The extreme altitude and cold bring with it extremely subjective (due to the lack of oxygen) and objective (weather changes, cold, etc.) dangers! Rescue possibilities are extremely limited.

Testimonials

Lhotse - Experience: Since 2005 we offer to climb Lhotse each year as part of our Mount Everest operations. Daniel Mazur, one of our leaders, had already summited Lhotse back in 1996.

  • The style of the organization and the ambiance inside the group were good. I liked the determination of the members and to be in a smaller group was nice. The leader was perfect, giving us lots of liberty and confidence. He always waited for the latest one on the mountain and climbed with them.
