Overview

7k-challenge on Everest: The high plateau of Tibet stretches far up, so that from the upper base camp (6,300m) on Mount Everest the north saddle can be reached in a climb of just 700 m / 2,300 ft - climb in one day. In 1921, participants of the Royal Geographical Society reached the North Col for the first time - among them George Mallory, who disappeared three years later during the ascent of Mount Everest for unknown reasons. Faraway Tibet seems mystical, but in the meantime the infrastructure has been developed by China to a comfortable standard. With a challenging glacier trekking and some basic technical knowledge you can stand over 7,000 meters, and this on the slopes of Mount Everest.

North Col 7k+ challenge

The North Col (Nordsattel) on Mount Everest is reached as part of our expeditions for summiting the mountain and the accompanying ABC (Advanced Base Camp, the second base camp) trek. The trek follows the moraines of the Rongbuk Glacier, and from the ABC, a one-day high-altitude tour leads to the 7,020-meter (23,031-foot) high North Col: Higher than any mountain top outside of Asia!

North Col - history and today

Early Exploration: In 1904, a British military expedition led by Francis Younghusband made its way through Tibet to push for the country's opening and granting of trade privileges. During this expedition, the first detailed photograph of Mount Everest's eastern flank was taken by J. Claude White from Kampa Dzong, approximately 150 kilometers away.

First Ascent of the North Col: Efforts to gain permission from the Dalai Lama for Mount Everest exploration and climbing expeditions took time. It wasn't until 1921 that the Royal Geographical Society received authorization. That year, the first British reconnaissance expedition was sent to the area, primarily for geological surveys and mapping. George Mallory, along with team members Bullock, Morshead, and Wheeler, scouted potential climbing routes. Their exploration established the now-standard northern route through the valley of the East Rongbuk Glacier to the North Col. The team reached the Rongbuk Valley from Kharta via the Lakpa La (also known as "Windy Gap"), supported by 27 Sherpas who helped set up camps. Subsequent expeditions in 1922 and 1924 attempted summit climbs, most notably linked to George Mallory. The 1924 expedition ended in tragedy when Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared on June 8, 1924, during their summit bid.

Today the ascent of Mount Everest from the north (via the "normal route" – the most commonly climbed path) passes through the North Col. Here, the first high-altitude camp is set up just above 7,000 meters (22,965 feet). Thanks to the well-established route to the North Col, trekkers on this journey benefit from excellent infrastructure, making this trek a unique opportunity to experience the grandeur of Everest.

Expedition or Ice Trekking?

Our North Col Trek accompanies our Mount Everest Expedition (Tibet). The advantages are clear: a larger team, stronger Sherpas, better medical support, and superior infrastructure than you would typically expect on a trekking journey. But trekking at over 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) — is that even possible? - We believe: Yes!

This tour is no more technically or physically demanding than comparable trekking tours in South America, such as those on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo (Ecuador), or other trekking routes in the Himalayas (Amphu Laptsa, West Col) or the Karakoram (Gondogoro La, Baltoro Trek). Of course, this is a challenging ice trek: during the final stage from ABC (6,300 meters / 20,669 feet), we traverse a glacier, and the steep wall to the North Col must be in good condition for us to proceed. With a bit of good fortune in terms of weather and health, you might just break the 7,000-meter / 23,000-foot barrier!

We continue for a short distance by bus until we reach Gyrikong (2700m).

In Gyrikong (2700m), we plan to spend another day for acclimatization, staying in a comfortable hotel. For leisure and acclimatization, we can go on a hike to an altitude of approximately 4,500m (14,750 ft).

We continue along the Gyrikong Zangbo River, then east over a 5000m high pass into the plateau near Tingri 4,340m (14,240 ft).

We spend another two days acclimatizing, with clear weather offering views of Mount Everest and the central Himalayan mountain range.

We are heading to the Chinese base camp. The base camp has already been set up, and the next step is organizing our personal equipment.

There are many beautiful hikes around the base camp up to an altitude of 6,000 meters / 19,685 feet.

Hike to the intermediate camp (5800m / 19,029 feet) on the way to ABC (Advanced Base Camp), which is the actual starting point for the Everest ascent from Tibet.

On the rest day at the intermediate camp, we enjoy the ambiance of the surrounding Rongbuk glacier landscape.

Ascent to ABC (Advanced Base Camp), the second base camp, which serves as the actual starting point for Mount Everest ascents and the North Col.

We are already at over 6,300 meters (20,600 ft): The highest base camp in the world! Higher than any point in North America!

Full day at ABC for the organization of the camp, your personal gear, and to rest and get used to the altitude.

We train on the glacier all the necessary techniques for the ascent to the North Col, such as using the Jumars/ascenders on the fixed ropes, self-belaying, and rappelling.

We ascend the final 700 meters of altitude over the glacier and an ice slope to the North Col with an altitude above 7,000 meters (23,000 feet): Higher than any point outside of Asia!

From there, you can see the further ascent to Mount Everest along the North Ridge. After a short rest enjoying the view we descend back to ABC (6300m / 20,669 feet).

contingency day at ABC

Return journey to Gyirong.

Return journey to Kathmandu.

There is time to pack, celebrate, and say goodbye to the new friends made. In the evening or early the next day, departure to the airport.

End of trip, return journey home.

Prepare

We accompany the Everest expedition up to the North Col (7.020m) with excellent support. Only the last day's climb from Base Camp (about 6,300m) follows alpine terrain and is comparable to other high-altitude trekking trips (Ecuador with Cotopaxi & Chimborazo, Rwenzori) and thus this trip is classified as trekking. However, 7000 meters of altitude are high, and good preparation is essential.

General

Almost nowhere else can you ascend to 7000 meters so "easily": in a 1-day high altitude tour from the 2nd base camp! Nevertheless, caution is advised: 7000 meters remain 7000 meters, the air is thin, the terrain is high alpine, the cold of Tibet as well as the length of the undertaking should not be underestimated.

temperature

For the NorthCol ascent:
• From 6000m+ in the morning down to -15°C (5°F)
• Around 7000m down to -20°C (-4°F)
• With wind chill factor down to -30°C (-22°F)"

Personal equipment

In addition to the complete mountain clothing, a warm expedition sleeping bag up to - 15 ° C comfort range, down clothing, and very warm expedition mountain boots belong to the basic equipment.

Testimonials

Everest Experience: Since our first Tibet expedition to Everest in 2004, we have now organized 13 expeditions on the north side of Mount Everest, most recently in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. On every expedition we reached North Col with members, most of our trips had a 100% success-rate. A number of highly experienced expedition leaders such as David O'Brien, Daniel Mazur, and Felix Berg work for us. Together with our superb sherpas and staff, you will benefit from our experience on your 7k-challenge on North Col.

Tibet has been largely closed to tourists from 2020 to 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Chinese regulations. For 2025, this tour will have a certain pioneering character, as there is uncertainty regarding entry and the granting of permits. Starting in 2026, we plan to offer regular scheduled departures for north-side trekking tours on Mount Everest.
