Stamina - Endurance

A mountain athlete needs endurance above any other specific fitness skill. Cardiovascular fitness is of course always subject to the movement (as climbing rocks or steep ice, you will not be able to transfer your triathlete or running fitness to mountains without being solid in the required mountaineering skills).

1 - Active Tour
Easy treks to EBC or on top of Kilimanjaro. You should be an active person.
 
2 - Sportive Tour
More demanding treks, simple climbs, like the climb of Elbrus. You should be a sportive person regularly exercising (at least 2-3x per week).
 
3 - Demanding Trek / Expedition
Very demanding treks like to the top of Aconcagua, or expeditions at the physical lower level like Ama Dablam. You should be an endurance athlete wit mountaineering experience. You should train endurance at least 3x/week.
 
4 - High Endurance - Expedition
To climb Everest (with oxygen-support) or some of the "easier" 8000m peaks you need a strong endurance. You should train specifically at least 4-5x per week.
 
5 - Very high Endurance - Expedition
Some of our special self-supported 8000m+ peak climbs as on Makalu, or to climb Everest (without oxygen-support) fit into this category. Your endurance should be near the level of a professional mountain athlete.

Kilimanjaro - Permit
We pay about 1000 USD for the national park fees. Residents (foreigners with valid status living in Tanzania) and citizens (Tanzanian nationality) pay less. Discounts are available for: 
-> Children up to 15 years: EUR 700
-> Citizens: EUR 850

Tips for the team:
Our local team is paid properly and receives a real salary as opposed to many other providers. However, we have a custom of tipping them. Due to the logistics of the moving camps we hire an average of 3-4 locals per participant for the 7 days (depending on the size of the group). For the week, each participant should expect to contribute US$150-200.

Kilimanjaro - Local:
The ascent without flight, airport transfers and hotel accommodation is possible. We organise it with our local summit team and 7 days on the mountain. Please ask us for details.

 

Kilimanjaro trekking - Services

The Kilimanjaro full-service-climb includes the following services:

Kilimanjaro Trek - planned Itinerary

Day 1 • Departure for Tanzania
We book your flight individually according to your desired place of departure. Depending on the connection, your departure will take place from late in the afternoon until early in the morning the next day. Possible flights are: a.) with KLM via Amsterdam b.) with Turkish via Istanbul c.) via the Emirates or d.) via Addis Abeda (with Lufthansa / Ethopian).
 
Day 2 • Arrival Tanzania, Kilimanjaro Int.
In case of a night flight, you will arrive early in the morning, otherwise during the day. Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay and dinner together with the group, to get to know each other and to have a briefing.
 
Day 3 • Kilimanjaro Trekking - 1st Rongai Camp
From the hotel or lodge, a private bus takes you through a region of lush vegetation, coffee, and banana plantations to the north side of Kilimanjaro. The journey continues through forest area to Nale Moru, the starting point for the climb. A narrow path along the corn and potato fields leads into forests and with a bit of luck, we can observe wild animals there. Finally, we leave the forest area and reach the camp at the transition from the woodland to the moorland near the Rongai cave.
Driving time approx. 3 hours, walking time approx. 3-4 hours. Accommodation in tent/full board (2600m).
 
Day 4 • Kilimanjaro Trekking - Kikelewa Camp
The path leads evenly up to the second cave at about 3450m, and small caves appear again and again in the landscape formed by lava flows. After lunch we leave the main trail and walk through the moorland towards Mawenzi. Finally, we reach the camp near Kikelewa Caves (3rd cave). Giant groundsels form fascinating scenery in the protected valley.

Day 5 • Kilimanjaro Trekking - Mawenzi Tarn
Though today's stage is steep, it is short. Grass-covered slopes lead into a high alpine and almost vegetation-free zone. The fantastic panoramic view rewards the effort of the ascent to the camp near the Mawenzi Tarn, a small lake at the foot of the dominating rock formations of the Mawenzi (“the Dark”), the 5149m high neighbor of the Kilimanjaro.

Day 6 • Kilimanjaro – rest day at Mawenzi Tarn
This day is very important to adapt to the thin air at altitude (acclimatization takes time). Optionally, we undertake short hikes against the fascinating backdrop of the Mawenzi.

Day 7 • Kilimanjaro Trekking - School Hut / Kibo Hut
A wide, desert-like plain, reminiscent of a lunar landscape, leads over the saddle between Mawenzi and Kilimanjaro to the next camp at School Hut. In the afternoon, the gear for the following day will be prepared and everything will be set up. Then, after an early dinner, an early night's rest is soon announced, in order to be rested and ready for the summit ascent shortly after midnight.
Walking time: approx. 4-5 hours. Accommodation in the hut/full board (4800m)
 
Day 8 • Kilimanjaro Ascent - Summit!
At midnight it's time to get up and start marching: Off to the Summit! The summit stage is the steepest and most demanding part of the tour in terms of physical condition. In the light of the headlamp, we set off as a group at a common pace. You will be accompanied by the local guides and the expedition leader, who are in radio contact with each other. In this way, individual groups can be formed if necessary, ascending at their own pace. The terrain leads over a gravel path and becomes steeper towards the top, the climbing more difficult. We need about 4-6 hours before reaching Gilman's Point at 5685 m, at the summit crater, and then the terrain becomes flatter. At this moment it is only 200 meters altitude difference, about 1-2 hours ascend until we reach the main summit, Uhuru Peak at 5895 m, the highest point in Africa.

The wide, wonderful view makes you forget all the exertions of the ascent. Because of the early ascent, we have the best chances for a good view. The descent to the Kibo-Hut at 4700 m and, after a short rest, to the Millennium or Horombo Camp goes surprisingly fast with decreasing altitude.

Walking time: approx. 9-12 hours (ascent 6-8 hours, descent 3-4 hours). Accommodation in tent/full board (3950m / 3760m)
 
Day 9 • Kilimanjaro Trekking - Descent
A long distance, but not very exhausting, today there will be plenty of time to admire and photograph the landscape and nature. Back at Marangu Gate we sign out the visitors' record logbook. It is time to say goodbye to guides and porters. You thank them for the guidance, care and support with a tip, provided you are satisfied with their contribution. Afterward, we drive to the hotel. For your summit success, you will be rewarded with a certificate from the National Park. The afternoon and evening remain for us to relax and celebrate.
Walking time approx. 3-4 hours. Travel time approx. 1 hour. Accommodation in hotel (B&B).
 
Day 10 • Flight home or onward journey
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and flight home (arrival in the morning of the next day could be the case).
Alternatively organization of the follow-up program (e.g. Safari or Zanzibar).

Varied and interesting route - reach the summit of Kibo (5895m) with us, safely and comfortably.

For the participation in the SummitClimb Kilimanjaro trekking every participant needs the personal equipment recommended by us.

Rental: We run a rental service in Moshi, where high quality equipment can be rented (sleeping bags and warm insulation jackets).

Tents: We provide high-quality, comfortable tents with thick underlay mats, large comfortable group tents from Hilleberg.

Categories

Kilimanjaro Trek - Participation

Requirements: Although the Kilimanjaro is almost 6,000 meters high, you don't need to have any mountaineering skills to climb it. An average physical condition and a strong will to succeed are sufficient to reach the summit. Daily stages take a maximum of 6-8 hours during the ascent. The Rongai-Mawenzi route offers the easiest way to the Kibo summit.
 
There are no technical requirements (mountaineering, climbing, etc.) for this Kilimanjaro route.
 
Tents versus huts: Our comfortable tented camps are more comfortable and hygienic than the crowded huts of the Marangu Route. This is an advantage of our tour versus the Marangu Route.
 
Acclimatization: Adapting to the altitude takes time, you cannot train it. The altitude profile of this route supports your acclimatization.
 
Training: We recommend you to be active at least 2-3 times a week on a regular basis (endurance sports) in order to prepare for this tour. Broken-in hiking boots are literally worth their weight in gold. You will receive many more tips in the 1st briefing after registration.
